Artists of the 12th Festival – Kay Aplin and Joseph Young
At the 12th Festival of High Temperatures Kay Aplin and Joseph Young will present a ceramic-sound performance and an exhibition of their works entitled "Fire plus water".
During the performance, Joseph Young will use a self made music wand in front of Kay Aplin's ceramic installation. Artworks of Kay Aplin – a renowned British artist are inspired by observation of plants under a digital microscope. Joseph Young uses binaural field recording techniques to capture everyday sounds of the Earth. Next, he amplifies them to create a unique sound atmosphere. During the festival conference they will give a lecture entitled: "The Ceramic House – Collaborations in Ceramics and Sound." Kay Aplin graduated from Public Art and Design at Chelsea College of Art in London in 1995, specialising in ceramics and glass. For 24 years Kay Aplin has been forging a successful career in architectural ceramics. During this time she has had many commissions around the UK and internationally, producing a distinct range of public realm art works. Kay also creates large-scale ceramic installations for galleries and commissions for interiors and gardens. Since 2011 Kay has been developing her project The Ceramic House – her home and a living showcase of her work. In 2016, within the Ceramic House project, In Camera gallery was inaugurated, offering a neutral space for installations and providing a space for events. In Camera, co-curated by a sound artist Joseph Young, is the centre of investigation on collaboration between ceramics and sound. It also offers exhibitions of international contemporary ceramics. In recent years, she has created monumental, ceramic wall installations. Her work has been presented, among others, at European Ceramic Context 2014 in Denmark, at Shetland Museum and Archives, Elit – Tile Triennial (The Dominican Republic) or British Ceramics Biennial 2017. Joseph Young is a sound artist specialising in binaural field recording techniques. He has exhibited and performed at Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Jerwood Hastings, De La Warr Pavilion, Towner Art Gallery, Pallant House, Estorick Collection and internationally in New York, Berlin and Seoul. Joseph has works in the permanent collections at Towner Art Gallery and Estorick Collection. His recent commission for Lewes Castle featured a permanent four channel sound installation in the grounds and an interactive, immersive audio guide for smartphones.
